Different Kinds of Acupuncture Techniques

Different Acupuncture Types

Acupuncture is a highly valued medical practice that involves stimulating specific points on the body, most often using needles to penetrate the skin.

There is a wide range of acupuncture treatments that are readily available to take advantage of, and they are designed to alleviate pain or aid in treating various health conditions.

Below, we outline six common acupuncture treatments to give you a better understanding of what’s possible with this long used Chinese form of medicine.

  • Heat treatments and acupuncture

Heat lamps are taken and located over acupuncture needles, this effectively warms up the needle and the heat travels down the needle into the acupuncture point – delivering a therapeutic effect. Common conditions that are treated using this method are women’s gynecological issues, sports-related injuries, and various body pains.

  • Acupressure

An acupuncturist massages or presses acupuncture points, and with certain conditions such as bad headaches and morning sickness a patient may be taught by a therapist how to locate one or two points to massage these points themselves.

  • Body acupuncture

This type of acupuncture is widely known as the most common because it’s suitable to treat the vast majority of conditions. This method involves the use of very fine steel needles which are inserted into numerous acupuncture points on the body. Every acupuncture point represents a different therapeutic effect. These points are located all over the body from the toes to the top of the head and everywhere in between. Minimal discomfort is felt since the needles are very thin, making this a very tolerable treatment for almost every patient

  • Magnets and acupuncture

This method works through the use of small magnets where they are strategically placed over acupuncture points.

Some pharmacies carry these particular magnets, and they are very effective for some patients in treating ailments including motion sickness or morning sickness.

  • Moxibustion and acupuncture

This interesting method uses small amounts of a herb and it gets attached to the top of an acupuncture needle and lighted.

A smoldering effect takes place from the herb and the needle gets warmed up along with the skin it penetrates – working well on conditions that are of a cold nature according to that of Chinese medicine.

  • Electroacupuncture

This type works in collaboration with body acupuncture, and this part of it uses an electroacupuncture machine that gets connected to the top of body acupuncture needles. The needles get stimulated through an electric current – resulting in a gentle tingling sensation. Electroacupuncture is beneficial for numerous conditions, but unfortunately, not all patients are eligible for this kind of treatment.

  • Auricular acupuncture

There is believed to be acupuncture points representing all areas of the body within the ear. These points can be stimulated using fine steel needles, and this method is used in conjunction with body acupuncture to specifically treat infertility with excellent results. This type of treatment is also effective when dealing with common addictions such as drinking alcohol or smoking.
